APT (Association for Play Therapy) defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development." In other words, Play therapy allows for an open interaction by meeting the child at their unique developmental level.
At Hope Village Wellness Center we use play to help children typically 12 and under to express themselves and learn in a fun safe environment. Play can be used for all ages allowing for exploration and creative modes of expression. The "language" of play opens up the ability for individuals to learn to communicate, identify and express emotions while maintaining emotional stressors.
Research suggests play therapy is an effective mental health approach, regardless of age, gender, or the nature of the problem, and works best when a parent, family member, or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process. Play can be used to address behavioral problems including anger management, grief/ loss, divorce and trauma or behavioral disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, academic and social development, physical/learning disabilities, and conduct disorders. With the use of play therapy children can work to maintain their emotions progressing to live a happy fulfilled life.
